Appendix D — Shared Conjecture on the Nature of Being and Knowing
This thesis carries the same kernel as the Root thesis. The formal argument is preserved. Its definitions and concise interpretation reflect the owner's clarification of temporal contingency. The extended origin and philosophical commentary remain in Root Appendix D. The practical account of the application does not require accepting the conjecture.
D.1 Framework: Relationships with Respect to S
Premise
- □(S → M)
Argument
- E → (C ∧ M)
- C → (¬(M ∧ □M) ∨ (M ∧ N))
- ((M ∧ N) → G) ↔ (S → G)
- ¬G → (¬(M ∧ □M) ∧ ¬S)
Thesis
- (S ⊢ (S ⊢ (M ∧ N))) → G
Terms and Operators
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| S | The Self — existential, structural, relational |
| M | Meaning. In this argument, the necessary meaning at issue is S's recognition of the necessity of contingency. |
| E | An event occurs |
| C | Contingency — the dependence inherent in temporal succession: everything in time changes state, dependent upon what preceded it. |
| □ | Modal necessity operator |
| □M | "It is necessary that Meaning obtains" (modal status) |
| N | S's existential affirmation that M is necessary — commitment, not modal necessity. |
| ⊢ | Existential affirmation (commitment), not logical entailment |
| G | Undefined — may emerge only relationally and existentially from S's engagement with M, C, and N |
| ¬ | Negation |
| ∧ | Conjunction |
| ∨ | Disjunction |
| → | Conditional (not causation) |
| ↔ | Biconditional |
C names temporal dependence. The necessary meaning concerns recognizing the necessity of that contingency. N names S's affirmation of that meaning; the turnstiles express the commitments developed in the argument. G remains undefined.
D.2 Interpretation
Meaning and the Self (Premise 1)
Premise 1 begins with S in relation to meaning. S names the existential self considered through these relations. Meaning is already encountered; the act of affirmation does not manufacture it.
Contingency and Recognition (Premises 2–3)
With E, S encounters temporal succession: each state depends upon what preceded it. The necessary meaning at issue is S's recognition of the necessity of this contingency.
Premise 3 concerns S's response to that meaning. N names the affirmation that M is necessary. Recognition and affirmation remain distinguishable; N expresses commitment rather than modal necessity.
Affirmation and the Relation to G (Premises 4–5)
An explanation can trace preceding conditions. Further understanding can inform S's affirmation, but does not perform it on S's behalf. N is the stance S takes. Premises 4–5 relate S, meaning and affirmation to G, while leaving G undefined.
The Double Commitment (Thesis 6)
- Inner ⊢: S affirms M together with N: meaning and the affirmation of its necessity.
- Outer ⊢: S affirms itself as bound to that affirmation.
The double commitment concerns both the stance and S's acknowledgment of itself as committed to it.
D.3 G Is Undefined Yet May Be Found
G remains intentionally undefined. The conjecture points toward its possible encounter through S's lived engagement with M, C and N.
The double affirmation is expressed through experience, commitment and response. The notation gives this relation a concise form; it does not exhaust what may be encountered through living it.
